Welcome! We are glad you are visiting our webpage. We communicate about events and other activities here and on social media. This page gives you quick access to both.

We are actively working on numerous areas and we would be happy to have your support, either through financial support or as a volunteer.

Some of our current and recent projects are

  • National Register nomination for Bethania Freedman neighborhood

Thanks to funding from many individuals as well as the Covington Foundation, John and Anna Hanes Foundation, Richard and Marie Reynolds Foundation, and the Winston-Salem Foundation, this project has been fully funded!

  • a Mid-Century Modernist house tour held in March 2025 that was a great success
  • Working with Ardmore Neighborhood Association on a solution for saving historic Ardmore homes from demolition by WFU Medical Center
  • We are also always working on identifying and working with owners to establish preservation easements on historic buildings
  • Technical workshops on graveyard preservation and historic wood windows so stay tuned!

We have a goal to host a monthly activity that helps promote a historic building, so keep an eye on the upcoming events below. If you have a suggestion let us know.  Some events are exclusive to members or members get first chance to register so consider joining which also helps as a financial supporter. Our Facebook page also has weekly postings to help talk about historic preservation and architectural terminology.

If you have any suggestions please email info@preservationforsyth.org or ask on our Facebook page.

Join us in Pfafftown on Wednesday, October 8 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. for a tour of the William Henry and Sarah Hauser Speas House. Located in western Forsyth County (approximately 11 miles northwest of downtown Winston-Salem), the house was built c. 1850 as a two-story, Greek Revival style brick I-house. In 1879, the house was enlarged with a two-story, gabled brick wing and maintains a high level of material integrity including: loadbearing brick walls, gable end brick chimneys, doors, windows, mantels, plaster walls, and wide pine floors and ceilings. The tour will be led by homeowner Mary T. “Tree” Bright. The cost of the tour is $30.00 for members and $40.00 for non-members. Refreshments will be provided.

Sam ‘The Dot Man’ McMillan (1926-2018) was a nationally famous local folk/’outsider’ artist in Winston-Salem. A recent exhibit was curated by the Arts Council in 2024 of his work. His studio and store is located at 701 W Northwest Blvd, directly across from Hanes Dye and Finish where he originally worked. His work painting furniture for the owner’s wife gave him a start in his work on painted objects. He painted not only traditional paintings but all types of found objects with his distinctive style. After his death however, the building remained vacant until it was purchased by David and Mary Bergstone in 2022. They have been working to clear out the building, get a new roof and secure the foundations to stabilize it.  Preservation Forsyth’s ‘hard-hat tour’ is the first time the building has been opened to the public to see what survives of his painting on the building itself. Come see where he created and left his mark on the walls and ceilings. Weigh in on some proposed ideas and make suggestions for how the building should be used for the community.
