Join us on Wednesday, November 12, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. for the Save the Dot Spot Open House. Sam "The Dot Man" McMillan (1926-2018) was a nationally famous local folk/"outsider" artist in Winston-Salem. A recent exhibit was curated by the Arts Council in 2024 of his work. His studio and store is located at 701 W Northwest Blvd, directly across from Hanes Dye and Finish where he originally worked. His work painting furniture for the owner’s wife gave him a start in his work on painted objects. He painted not only traditional paintings but all types of found objects with his distinctive style. After his death however, the building remained vacant until it was purchased by David and Mary Bergstone in 2022. They have been working to clear out the building, get a new roof and secure the foundations to stabilize it. Preservation Forsyth’s Save the Dot Spot Open House is the first time the building has been opened to the public to see what survives of his painting on the building itself. Come see where he created and left his mark on the walls and ceilings. Weigh in on some proposed ideas and make suggestions for how the building should be used for the community. Admission is free; donations are appreciated. Although the event is free, please take a minute to register and let us know you are coming!
